No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.

The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
